When I opened the books, and I could open as many as I liked because it cost us nothing, the pictures lay on my eyes like oil on water and the dancing letters settled on my tongue with the smell and taste of black-jack sweeties. While Ma bit at her lips, ripped at her cuticles and read old magazines, I was learning how stories could make me safe.

It struck me as odd how my dad and the policeman were talking as if they were friends. I wondered if maybe death does that - turns strangers into friends for a few minutes, or an hour, or maybe even a whole day.

By now in a filthy temper,  for a moment he actually contemplated abandoning ship and taking the escape route normally earmarked for One Star weekends, which was to remember suddenly a pressing engagement in London, make his goodbyes, and head for home.
