Book Beginnings on Fridays - The Couple Next Door

Book Beginnings on Fridays is hosted by Rose City Reader and as she says the idea of this meme is for you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author's name. There's a linky list on the website and you can use #BookBeginnings on Twitter.

This week I'm reading an ARC of The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena, it's due to be published on 14th July.

Anne can feel the acid churning in her stomach and creeping up her throat; her head is swimming. She's had too much to drink.

The Couple Next Door

Book Description

You never know what's happening on the other side of the wall.

Your neighbour told you that she didn't want your six-month-old daughter at the dinner party. Nothing personal, she just couldn't stand her crying.

Your husband said it would be fine. After all, you only live next door. You'll have the baby monitor and you'll take it in turns to go back every half hour.

Your daughter was sleeping when you checked on her last. But now, as you race up the stairs in your deathly quiet house, your worst fears are realized. She's gone.

You've never had to call the police before. But now they're in your home, and who knows what they'll find there.

What would you be capable of, when pushed past your limit?

  1. Sounds like a terrifying situation. I hope you are enjoying the book. I am spotlighting Fool Me Once by Harlan Coben this week. Happy reading!

  2. I'm not sure that beginning would inspire me to go on reading. It's actually a little off-putting -- like an ad for Zantac. But the story does sound intriguing. Thanks for sharing, and happy reading this week!

  3. There are a lot of thrillers right now with missing children as their theme. I'd love to see where this plot goes.

  4. That is a parent's worst nightmare. I am guessing the neighbors took the baby, but that would be too obvious. :)

I would definitely read this book.

    ENJOY!!

    Thanks for sharing.
